Maria Nicanor Kuratorin, BMW Guggenheim Lab
Maria Nicanor joined the curatorial staff in October 2005 and now heads the architecture and urbanism initiatives of the museum. When she first joined the Guggenheim, she worked on several exhibitions, including Spanish Painting from El Greco to Picasso; Cy Twombly for the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao; Frank Lloyd Wright: From Within Outward; Contemplating the Void: Interventions in the Guggenheim Museum; and Color Fields for the Deutsche Guggenheim Berlin. Nicanor leads the curatorial team of the BMW Guggenheim Lab, an international traveling laboratory for urban experiments and public programs. She is a regular contributor to contemporary-art and architecture publications and has lectured internationally on the future of museums in the twenty-first century and the role of architecture in museum practice. She holds a BA in art history from the Autonoma University, Madrid, and Sorbonne University, Paris; an MA in museum studies from New York University; and a Ph.D. (ABD) from the Autonoma University, Madrid, with a focus on architectural history and theory.

Maria Nicanor gehört dem Kuratorium seit Oktober 2005 an. Im Guggenheim hat sie bisher an verschiedenen Ausstellungen mitgewirkt, darunter die Ausstellung spanischer Malerei von El Greco bis Picasso („Spanish Painting from El Greco to Picasso“, von der International Association of Art Critics, AICA-USA, zur besten historischen Ausstellung gewählt), „Cy Twombly“ für das Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, „Frank Lloyd Wright: From Within Outward“ (von der AICA-USA zur besten Architektur-/Designausstellung –2009 gewählt), „Contemplating the Void: Interventions in the Guggenheim Museum“ und zuletzt „Color Fields“ für das Deutsche Guggenheim Berlin. Gemeinsam mit dem Kurator David van der Leer leitet Nicanor das Kuratorium des BMW Guggenheim Lab, ein internationales mobiles Forschungslabor für städtebauliche Experimente und öffentliche Programme, das in sechs Jahren weltweit neun Metropolen bereisen wird. Nicanor schreibt regelmäßig für Publikationen über moderne Kunst und Architektur und hält weltweit Vorlesungen über die Zukunft des Museums im 21. Jahrhundert und die Rolle der Architektur in der Museumspraxis. Sie hat einen Bachelor in Kunstgeschichte von der Autonomen Universität Madrid und der Sorbonne-Universität Paris, einen Master in Museumskunde von der New York University und promovierte (ABD) an der Autonomen Universität Madrid mit Schwerpunkt auf Architekturgeschichte und -theorie.
