The Plastiki is an eighteen-meter-long catamaran built from 12,500 reclaimed plastic bottles and other waste products.
The strength and performance of the construction was tested by sailing it for five months and more than 11,000 miles across the Pacific Ocean, from San Francisco to Sydney.
This voyage was not only symbolic of the power of renewable energy systems like solar panels, wind, and bicycle generators. It also set the focus on the masses of waste we are throwing into our ecosystem, especially our oceans.

Jo Royle, build project manager and skipper of the Plastiki, is an internationally recognized trans-ocean sailing skipper who has now devoted her work to reducing human impact on the world’s oceans. She became involved in the Plastiki project after witnessing firsthand the building amount of plastic on the world’s most remote shores.

Die Stärke und Leistung dieser Konstruktion wurde durch den 5 Monate dauernden Segeltörn über 11.000 Meilen quer über den Pazifik von San Fransisco nach Sydney getestet.
Diese Reise war nicht nur symbolisch für die Kraft erneuerbarer Energiesysteme wie Sonnenkollektoren, Wind und Fahrradgeneratoren. Es deutet auch auf die Massen an Abfall, die wir in unser Ökosystem, vor allem in unsere Ozeane, werfen.

Jo Royle ist Managerin des Bauprojekts und Kapitän der Plastiki. Sie ist eine international bekannte Ozeanseglerin, welche sich nun in ihrer Arbeit der Reduktion der Auswirkungen des Menschen auf die Weltmeere widmet. Sie ist bei dem Plastiki Projekt aktiv, seitdem sie mit eigenen Augen die Menge an Plastik gesehen hat, die sich an den entlegensten Küsten der Welt auftürmen.
