A melting pot for migrants, Mumbai’s mill communities once sparked a remarkable and vibrant system of food distribution and a unique cuisine that fused flavors and traditions as diverse as the communities themselves. But as the mill industry has all but disappeared, that culture is also slowly slipping away, with little effort made to document or celebrate its significance. In this “Food and Memory” event, we explore women’s histories in the mill-worker community, and look at how their individual and collective lives shaped the flavors of this city.
Participants: Vaishali Girkar, former millworker, winding department, and owner of a Khanawal (traditional mess); Vijaya Mantri, textile designer and social worker; Anjali Purohit, painter and author of the book Raagi Ragini; Leela Raote, health and nutritionist for Century Mill and social worker.
