Stein auf Stein (Volker Schutsch and Andreas Neuman, Germany, 1981, 70 min.)
Stein auf Stein (Stone on Stone) is a rare portrayal of the squatting scene in early 1980s West Berlin. The demolition of old inner-city residential buildings to make way for new ones became the agenda of the local government and urban planners. Groups of people tried to stop the destruction by moving into threatened buildings and making them their communal homes. Filmed on Super 8, this film has recently been digitized but never before distributed or publicly released.
The screening will be followed by a Q&A with Gerhard Schuhmacher of Filmwerkschau and Suzan Beermann of Eiszeit Kino Berlin.
