In this participatory project, a group of young, Berlin-based musicians will experiment with the possibilities of translating natural urban sounds into musical performance. In the first part of this workshop, join guided walks through different Berlin neighborhoods and listen intensively to the acoustic atmospheres of the streets’ instantaneous environment. Certain acoustic moments will be simultaneously transcribed into musical notation with the help of stopwatches.
Later, under the supervision of experimental musician Maurice de Martin, the group of musicians will compose a general score that they will use as the basis for a temporary sound sculpture/performance.
Maurice de Martin is a trans-disciplinary artist, experimental musician, and artistic researcher. He received his master’s degree in contemporary arts practice at the Hochschule der Künste, Bern, Switzerland. As a DAAD fellow, he studied Eastern European folklore in Romania and Bulgaria. He is a contributing member of the internationally renowned experimental music ensemble Zeitkratzer and former musical director at the Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz, Berlin. De Martin has participated in more than fifty international publications and various exhibitions at Temporäre Kunsthalle Berlin and the Serpentine Gallery, London, among others. Since 2009, de Martin has taught the “Y-Institute for Transdisziplinarity” of the Academy of the Arts, Bern.

Eine akustische Forschungsreise durch unsere Stadt speziell für junge MusikerInnen
In diesem partizipativen Projekt experimentiert eine heterogene Gruppe junger Berliner MusikerInnen mit den Möglichkeiten der Übersetzung "natürlicher" urbaner Geräuschsphären in die ihnen vertraute Welt der musikalischen Performance. Über akustische Streifzüge durch verschiedene Kieze werden die Mitwirkenden mit Hilfe von Aufnahmegeräten, Stoppuhren, Papier und Bleistift kurze Audiofragmente und individuelle "Hörpartituren" kreieren.
Die Teilnehmer sind Klang-Forscher und musikalische Akteure zugleich, jeder übersetzt seinen individuellen Wahrnehmungsraum in eine graphische Partitur. Durch eine gezielt vorgenommene Schärfung der Wahrnehmung entfaltet sich das "Rauschen des Alltags": Geräuschkulissen, die normalerweise als störend wahrgenommen werden, erscheinen plötzlich als künstlerisch anregend.
Am Nachmittag des Workshops im LAB wird man sich in der Gruppe über die einzelnen Erfahrungen der "akustischen Exkursionen" austauschen und vergleicht die dabei entstandenen Klang- und Partitur-Fragmente.
Als Werk der "kollektiven Autorenschaft" wird zum Finale des Workshops gemeinsam eine "Klang-Partitur" erarbeitet. Die "Forschungsergebnisse" werden am Abend des Workshop-Tages als öffentlich zugängliche, konzertante Klanginstallation präsentiert.

Maurice de Martin ist ein experimenteller Musiker und transdisziplinärer Künstler. Er studierte Musikpädagogik, war musikalischer Direktor der Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz, Berlin, hat weltweite Konzert- und Gastspielaktivitäten sowie Ausstellungsbeteiligungen. Seit 2009 ist er Dozent am "Y- Institut für Transdisziplinarität" der Hochschule der Künste, Bern.
