What would happen if a critical piece of urban infrastructure—like waste collection—was decentralized and put in the hands of citizens? How reliable and efficient would such a system be? Who would be accountable for its proper functioning? Dietmar Offenhuber explores the possibilities and limitations of self-organized infrastructure. Based on the work of the SENSEable City Lab, Offenhuber discusses the issues of infrastructure effectiveness, awareness, and results.
Dietmar Offenhuber is a research fellow in the SENSEable City Lab at the Department of Urban Studies and Planning at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He has a background in architecture, urban studies, and digital media art. His research interests include the role of technology in urban life, especially the cultural, political, and organizational aspects of urban infrastructures. Offenhuber holds degrees from the Technische Universität Wien and MIT Media Lab, and is currently working on his Ph.D. at MIT. He was a key researcher in the Ars Electronica FutureLab and the Ludwig Boltzmann Institut Medien.Kunst.Forschung and a professor in the Interface Cultures program at the Kunstuniversität Linz. He frequently collaborates with sound artist Markus Decker as well as composers Sam Auinger and Hannes Strobl under the name Stadtmusik.

Was würde passieren, wenn ein wichtiger Bestandteil der städtischen Infrastruktur – wie die Müllabfuhr – dezentralisiert und in die Hände von Bürgern übergeben würde? Wie zuverlässig und effizient wäre solch ein System? Wer wäre für den ordnungsgemäßen Ablauf verantwortlich? Dietmar Offenhuber erforscht die Möglichkeiten und Grenzen selbstorganisierter Infrastruktur. Anhand der Arbeiten des SENSEable City Lab bespricht Offenhuber die Themen Effektivität, Erkenntnis und Ergebnisse der Infrastruktur.
Dietmar Offenhuber ist Forschungsstipendiat am SENSEable City Lab im Department of Urban Studies and Planning am Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Er ist Experte für Architektur, Städteplanung und digitale Medienkunst. Bei seinen Forschungen untersucht er die Bedeutung von Technik im urbanen Leben, insbesondere die kulturellen, politischen und organisatorischen Aspekte der städtischen Infrastrukturen.
