Mumbai has experienced an exponential rate of growth in recent decades, and the city’s public spaces are few and often anything but solitary. So when venturing outside of their homes, where do Greater Mumbai’s approximately 20 million citizens find private, personal refuges for themselves or their families? And where do they go when they gather with friends or others? To investigate these questions, the Lab invited Mumbaikars to contribute to a research project conducted in cooperation with Partners for Urban Knowledge, Action and Research (PUKAR), a Mumbai-based independent research collective, and Lab Team member Aisha Dasgupta. Through 39 in-depth interviews and 800 in-person surveys conducted all over Mumbai, the project aimed to reveal how Mumbaikars think about privacy in relation to themselves, their friends and family, and among their communities.
