What kinds of places make us happy? What environments cause stress or anxiety? How does the physical environment of the city we inhabit affect our feelings and thoughts? New methods of mobile data-collection that use smartphones and body sensors allow us to ask such questions by conducting experiments right on the street instead of the cloistered environment of the laboratory. Colin Ellard, a professor at the University of Waterloo, will describe the development of the methods of “street psychogeography,” share some of his findings, and discuss future prospects for this fruitful method of studying the human response to place.
