A melting pot for migrants, Mumbai’s mill communities once sparked a remarkable system of food distribution and a unique cuisine that fused diverse flavors and traditions. In this “Food and Memory” event, we explored women’s histories in the mill-worker community, and looked at how their individual and collective lives shaped the flavors of this city. Participants: Vaishali Girkar, former millworker, winding department, and owner of a Khanawal (traditional mess); Vijaya Mantri, textile designer and social worker; Anjali Purohit, painter and author of the book Raagi Ragini; Leela Raote, health and nutritionist for Century Mill and social worker. Moderated by: Sumedha Raikar.
